Salary £30,000- £35,000 (dependent on experience)
Recyke y’bike – Charity
Main Office – Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne

Do you want to make a tangible difference to the lives of people living in difficult circumstances? Reduce landfill and enable sustainable transport solutions? Are you passionate about developing people and enjoy leading a team? Are you looking for a varied, interesting and immensely satisfying role? Then you could be our next General Manager!

Role: To manage the operation and development of Recyke y’Bike in line with the charity’s aims and its business plan, maintaining its ethos and environmental vision. Recyke y’ bike is a highly successful charity which has grown steadily over its 16 years of operation to play a key role in sustainable transport in the North East of England. We
have a mission to get people cycling safely and affordably on re-used bicycles and an ambition to teach as many people as possible how to carry out their own repairs and maintenance. We offer maintenance classes and have a very well used bike referral scheme enabling people on very low incomes to be referred for a free bike to help with transport costs as well as physical and/or mental health. Our team of 10 trained mechanics and 60+ active volunteers fix up bikes donated by the public for resale and provide a growing training and repair service. Refurbished bikes are sold at reasonable prices to the public in our retail outlets in Byker and Chester le Street.

We’ve hit our crowdfunding target – and you can keep raising money for us without spending a penny!

In October 2022, we started a crowdfunding campaign with our long-term partners at Kids Kabin, aiming to raise just under £7000 to keep delivering street bike repair workshops in Byker and Walker and to increase their number and reach. These workshops have been popular among residents and we know that many families have come to rely on them, especially at this time of economic crisis. Today, we are pleased to communicate that we’ve hit our target! Plans are already underway to start delivering sessions in February and more news will come soon. A huge thanks is due to all of you who helped us by donating or sharing our cause.

Not only: we’ve been offered a further incentive by Easyfundraising, a free online fundraising platform for charities we’re signed up to. They offered to pledge £1 for any new person registering to it and choosing us as their cause between now and January 31. To unlock the pledges, we need at least 10 new supporters. Fundraising through easyfundraising doesn’t cost a penny to you – it will be the £7000 registered brands that will give us a little amount whenever you shop online through easyfundraising. We will then be able to invest the money raised to buy locks for referral bikes, thus ensuring people who receive them can keep them for as long as possible.

All you have to do is:

1. Go to: https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/?&utm_campaign=raise-more&utm_medium=email&utm_content=rm-raf-e1 or scan the QR code below

2. Click ‘support this cause’ and create an account

3. Choose from over 7,000 brands to do your online shopping as normal and our cause will receive a free donation with every purchase you make.

None of what we do would be possible without your help. Thank you!!

BBC One Show: it’s not over

Hi all,

The BBC One Show: Gift a Bike for Christmas by far exceeded our expectations and left us with with plenty of bikes to be repaired in 2023!

Here are some of the best things that came out of it:

  • 40 bikes were refurbished and redistributed through the West End Food Bank
  • More than 80 more bikes were donated and are now waiting to be refurbished, scrapped, redistributed! We need new volunteers!
  • A kind person has volunteered to pick up donated bikes from his neighbouring area and bring them to Byker. This collaboration will go on in the new year, and if anyone else feels inspired to do the same, we are always on the lookout for volunteers who can pick up bikes for us. Fell free to email us at: vanessa@recyke.bike. As we say in Italy, l’insieme fa la forza.
  • We discovered that a hidden talent hid among us! James was fantastic on TV, and you can hear him talking about the benefits of cycling here.

And if you are curious to know what happened to the refurbished bikes, tune into the BBC One Show on Friday 16th, and learn all about it!
